FireOak’s favorite ideas for intranet content for August 2024:

National Wellness Month

Celebrate National Wellness Month through your company intranet! Use the end of summer to focus on well-being, self-care, and healthy living. You can adjust wellness month activities to fit your work setting, whether your team works in-office, at home, or in a combination of the team. Use your intranet as a tool to encourage healthy behaviors and to emphasize the value of well-being in your work community.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Create wellness challenges for employees to join. For example, a 10,000 steps per day challenge could be advertised, with progress tracked via a form, and achievements celebrated using your intranet as the main platform.
  • Promote and host virtual fitness classes on your intranet.
  • Design a space for healthy recipe sharing. This is a great way to get staff members actively involved in wellness month and using your intranet. It also has the potential to bring staff members together as they find common interests in culinary delights!
  • Short, guided meditation sessions are an excellent way to decrease workplace stress. Provide links to meditations on your intranet and/or have a weekly meditation news post.

World Wide Web Day (August 1)

The World Wide Web (WWW) Day offers your company a way to engage employees and showcase the significance of the internet in corporate operations, particularly for organizations that support hybrid or remote work. Here are a few ideas for ways to use your intranet to promote World Wide Web Day:

  • Use August 1 as an opportunity to improve digital literacy skills. Offer resources on your intranet, such as tutorials or guides, to improve internet-related skills and understanding.
  • Host online collaboration challenges — for example, an Intranet Scavenger Hunt — that require staff members to utilize web tools.
  • Create and post a poll on the intranet to ask and show how staff members use the web to support their daily work.

International Cat Day (August 8)

Your intranet content for August wouldn’t be complete without recognizing International Cat Day. This day is  a tribute to cats, but also serves as an opportunity to highlight their welfare and difficulties, share cat-related insights, and to engage in efforts towards improving the world. Plus, it’s a good opportunity to thank cats for the joy they bring to their human companions.

Here are some purr-fect content ideas for your intranet:

·       Celebrate your office cats and their humans. Provide a space for employees to share photos, stories, and anecdotes about their cats. Bonus, this is a great opportunity to increase morale by promoting something fun to bring members together.

·       Cat Cafes or local businesses that offer a cat-centric experience may host special events in honor of this day. Share any events you are aware of on your intranet to increase the visibility of community activities.

·       Create cat-themed contests. Have a photo contest, best cat costumes, etc. and let staff members vote for their favorites.

National Booklovers Day (August 9)

National Booklovers Day is a day for book enthusiasts and presents a chance to appreciate books, promote reading, explore new genres, and maybe try a different way of reading (like an eReader instead of a physical book for example). Here are some ideas for incorporating National Booklovers Day on your intranet:

·       Create a dedicated space on your intranet where staff can share their favorite books, authors, or work-related must reads.

·       Hold a virtual book club. Employees can vote on the book to read and then participate in discussion threads and virtual meetups to discuss the text.

·       Launch and support a reading challenge on your intranet asking staff members to set a personal reading goal. The intranet will act as a platform for participants to share their progress, book choices, and reflections.

  • Host a literary trivia virtual event covering a range of authors and genres. Let staff members test their knowledge, learn some interesting facts, and maybe even get an idea for their next book to read!

Virtual Talent Show

A virtual talent show is a fun, inclusive, and engaging way to foster a positive work culture through your company intranet. What is a virtual talent show? It’s an event where employees can share their talents, skills, and creativity in an online format (similar to a face-to-face one). It’s a wonderful way to create a feeling of belonging and celebrate diversity in the workplace. Your organization can decide whether submissions should be recorded beforehand or broadcast live, considering the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

How to incorporate your intranet:

  • News and announcements are a great way to promote your virtual talent show (include important dates, updates, how to watch the show, etc.). Offer snippets or teasers to increase interest.
  • Create a virtual talent show sign-up form and embed it (or post a link) to your intranet. Staff in charge of the virtual talent show can review submissions and notify staff as appropriate.
  • On the day of, use your intranet to post video submissions or a livestream! Make sure there is an opportunity for staff to provide feedback or even vote on their favorite submissions.

Intranet User Feedback Survey

August is a good time to poll staff members about the intranet itself. An intranet specific user feedback survey is an essential tool to make sure that your company’s intranet platform meets the needs and expectations of employees. A well-designed survey will reveal information about the user experience, highlight areas for enhancement, and measure overall happiness.

Some tips for a user feedback survey:

  • Define survey objectives in advance.
  • Know the areas of the intranet that you want to evaluate.
  • Keep the survey concise.
Don’t forget to share some snippets or full results with staff members after data has been collected and analyzed. Staff love to see how their input is being turned into action.
